Night Time

Our topic for this half term is all about night time, looking at nocturnal animals, the night sky and also looking at different jobs that mean some people have to work through the night.

This week we have been mainly focusing on nocturnal animals and have done lots of fun activities to support our learning.

If you click on the picture below it take you to the website with lots of interesting facts about different nocturnal animals....

Easter in Year 2 and Pysanky

This week we are doing lots of activities to celebrate Easter and in particular are looking at Easter celebrations in different cultures to ours. We are looking at the art of Pysanky, a Ukraine tradition:

'Pysanky is a traditional craft in Ukraine and Poland. The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with wax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colours of dye, a multi-coloured pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colours that were covered up at each stage.'

Here are a few of our designs:

We are also making Easter Palm Crosses.... using sugar paper strips!

Here is the video for how to make one!!

The Black Hat - Maia Walczak

This week sees the last week we will spend looking at the author Maia Walczak and we are looking at her story 'The Black Hat. We are doing some drama to act out the story using our black hats in school. We are also having a debate about whether animals should be kept in cages like the boy does in the story.

We even have a pretend cage set up in our classroom so we can imagine what it might feel like...!

Here is the story

The Girl With The Yellow Bag - Maia Walczak

The week before half term, in literacy, we had been comparing another story of Maia Walczak, 'The Girl With the Yellow Bag' to her other stories that we have looked at. We were thinking about adjectives to describe. We had our own yellow bags and were describing what was inside them and then using our imagination to think about what each object could turn into, like it does it the story.

Here are some photos of us and also the video at the bottom of the story.
