The Ugly Sharkling - Maia Walczak

This week in literacy we have been looking at another of Maia Walczak's stories and this time it was 'The Ugly Sharkling'. We were looking at the different roles of the characters in the story and how they made us feel. We were also thinking about the moral of the story. Another activity we had to do was to decide, if we could have any animal as a best friend what would we choose and where would we go?

You can watch the story here...

Easter in Year 2 and Pysanky

This week we are doing lots of activities to celebrate Easter and in particular are looking at Easter celebrations in different cultures to ours. We are looking at the art of Pysanky, a Ukraine tradition:

'Pysanky is a traditional craft in Ukraine and Poland. The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with wax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colours of dye, a multi-coloured pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colours that were covered up at each stage.'

Here are a few of our designs:

We are also making Easter Palm Crosses.... using sugar paper strips!

Here is the video for how to make one!!

The Black Hat - Maia Walczak

This week sees the last week we will spend looking at the author Maia Walczak and we are looking at her story 'The Black Hat. We are doing some drama to act out the story using our black hats in school. We are also having a debate about whether animals should be kept in cages like the boy does in the story.

We even have a pretend cage set up in our classroom so we can imagine what it might feel like...!

Here is the story
